Lakewood Parks hits a “Treefecta”

This April, a culmination of three events will occur for Lakewood Parks.

Roxanne Miles, the new Lakewood Parks, Recreation and Community Service Director for the City of Lakewood will scramble across the city on April 25 to administer the annual Parks Appreciation Day.

Parks that have high community involvement will receive resources on April 25; Edgewater Park, Fort Steilacoom Park, Harry Todd Park, Springbrook Park, and a ribbon-cutting will happen for the renovation of Wards Lake Park.  At $6.3million, it includes numerous new features.

Miles was recently the Pierce County Parks Director.

“I feel like I'm serving a singular entity” by becoming Lakewood’s Parks Director as she was seeking “a greater touch point.”

Upon being selected as Lakewood’s Parks Director, she said “It’s an honor to be selected to steward Lakewood’s amazing parks, open space and community programs. I can’t wait to get started!”

Lakewood’s Parks consist of 14 sites over hundreds of acres but new acreage is being added.

Lakewood Parks has a Legacy Plan in place since 2014.  The 2020 Legacy Plan was a 400-page monster that starts right from the beginning of parks purposes and builds into Lakewood’s future.

“I’ll have a full presentation for Council 4/13 and the Parks & Recreation Advisory Board on 4/28 that speaks to some overall goals and level of service items.”

According to Director Miles; “The Parks, Recreation & Community Services department will update the Parks Legacy Plan over the next few months. The department’s planning work will include updates to the inventory and conditions of parks and equipment, parks programs, a demand & needs analysis, and a new trails section!

“We have additional groups who are coming out to serve at Harry Todd Park and Edgewater for Parks Appreciation Day this year, so I expect us to be close to 150-200 folks across the park system, which would be wonderful.  We are also doing a grand opening celebration at Wards Lake Park.

From the City’s Park webpage; “The grand opening is an exciting milestone, a tribute to the Lakewood community, and a showcase of the amenities now available to explore. After years of planning, restoration, and community-driven investment, Wards Lake Park has become a vibrant, accessible, and adventure-ready destination for all ages.”
